The Boys and Girls Clubs (BGC) of Miami-Dade received a major financial boost in September of 2015 when they were presented with a $1 million donation to support the expansion of the very center where Alex Rodriguez learned the game of baseball. The charitable gift was presented by Alex and MLB’s Chief Operating Officer Tony Petitti, on behalf of MLB’s Urban Youth Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit that oversees and funds the MLB Urban Youth Academy network and youth-related programs. Tony is a member of the Board of Governors of Boys and Girls Clubs of America; Alex is a board member of the BGC of Miami-Dade.
The donation helped expand South Florida clubs to serve more youth who frequent the centers for tutoring, activities and mentorship. In addition, the programs provide a significant economic impact deeply felt by the community. A recent BGC of Miami Annual Report calculated the economic impact to community families and taxpayers to be an impressive $68 million dollars in savings, an additional $10 million in volunteer labor and the reduction in nearly 115 crimes/arrests of youth.
This is powerful philanthropy.
